Q1.How would you describe ‘Bigsmall’ in under 50 words
Bigsmall is an online store where one can find unique and quirky gifts for any kind of occasion or anyone’s personality. With the plethora of common, conventional gifts offered online, Bigsmall strives to makes its presents shine in a sea of monotony, with it’s exceptional, one-of-a-kind products.
Q2.Who is the team behind your venture?
At the moment, we have a team of 9 core members- 1 customer relationship manager, 1 operations head, 4 packaging boys, 1 supervisor, and 2 founders who take care of marketing and business development. Along with this, we also have a two interns on board who help us with SEO and content writing.
Q3.Can you tell us a little about your background and what inspired you to start working on Bigsmall ?
Bigsmall was founded in May 2015 by Aman and Yatin Hans. Yatin is a marketing grad from Esade Business School and has worked with major companies such as Reebok, O&M and 91springboard. Given his love for eCommerce, he’s also been involved with dealsandyou and Degustabox, a spanish eCommerce startup in Barcelona.
Aman, is a Computer Science engineer, and a start up enthusiast. He has had experience working across multiple verticals with 3 other startups- Leh Leh Sports, Festivalas, and 91mobiles.
Our interest in this field was kindled with the eCommerce boom and we keenly paid attention to it. We gave shape to our vague ideas and thought of creating an online store. This thought soon became a passion project when both the founders Yatin and Aman realised what to do with this store. We did a lot of research and ultimately launched a store with curated unique gifts that people haven’t experienced before.
Q4.What is your work style?
Our work environment is extremely casual and relaxed. We don’t enforce a binding dress code or implement any tedious regulations. It’s a space that encourages creativity and out-of-the-box thinking, filled with our funny and exciting products. However, when it comes to work, we’re highly professional in dealings and ensure that work gets done properly and on time. Our aim is create leaders and we push every individual in our company to be involved in every task.
Q5.How did you come across this idea? What was missing from the current solutions that you are seeking to fix?
My mother used to sleep while resting her head on her hand, wrapping a cloth on it to provide a softer surface. Looking at this sight always made me cringe and I used to think of how there had to be a better solution out there. This is a memory that I most strongly associate with the conception of Bigsmall. It led to our search for comfortable hand pillows and we soon found the “Power Nap Pillow”. We gifted it to her and she felt elated! It was the perfect gift. This is where the thought behind starting BigSmall.in triggered. We looked for other such problems and started to search for products to solve all these issues. This brought about the idea of bigsmall.in, a gifting platform where every gift personifies an individual.
Q6.How did you acquire your first customers and what has been the learning along the way?
Initially, our customers were all friends and family and we increased business by word of mouth. Slowly, this expanded to more and more people. This initial experience taught us the value of feedback. We’d insist on receiving detailed feedback about every product we sold and ensuring that our customers were satisfied. This helped us immensely to understand what customers are looking for and what it is that they really want out of a product. We firmly believe in having a human side to our online business too. Hence focus is a lot on understanding people to provide the highest customer experience.
Q7.If you could only give one piece of advice, what would it be?
When you’re starting out in the business world, it is imperative to believe in your product as well as in yourself. It is this strong conviction that will further be transmitted to customers. Also, it is essential to keep an open mind at all times and pay close attention to how the market responds to your competitor’s products. Learning and growth are aspects that occurs at every minute in each stage.
Q8.How has the growth been since launch and what are the future plans?
In terms of orders and sales, we’ve witnessed a growth of 400% per quarter in the last FY. Within the last 3 months, we’ve had about 10,000 orders on our online store. Our customer base across Social Media proudly boasts of over 1,00,000 active followers. The size of our team has grown from 3 to 9 people.
At the moment, we are focussing on building our team by hiring the right people. We’re also always on the lookout for vendors we can bring out more creative products with. We’d like to take our operations to a global market and reach out to wider audience.

They are useful items, real problem solvers and appeal to the eye, all at once. We don’t compromise on quality and we’ve also made sure to keep pricing in a way that ensures we can reach out to many people.
Q10.What is the biggest hurdle you have faced or are still facing?
The biggest obstacle we’ve faced is managing logistics. Keeping track of all that is being sold or bought on the website, managing the inventory and so on have been roadblocks. Setting up the website was a bit challenging too, but with the help of the right eCommerce platforms, it became much simpler.
